NEXT OPEN MIKE & FEATURE...

Wed. Feb. 3, 2010 -Sign up @8 PM
With 2 Great Features:
1.
Really Awkward Debutantes (Jillian and Nathan)
Nathan and Jillian are two theatre students from the West Coast that met in NYC to play folky powerpop. Sometimes poignantly serious, sometimes irreverently silly. Please enjoy responsibly...
http://www.myspace.com/reallyawkwarddebutantes
2. Owl Stretching Time (Paloma, Ed, and Brian)
Once upon a time Paloma Lehfeldt was all alone performing as a singer songwriter in New York City. She then decided to join a band called Eastern Exposure in the spring of 2009, where she met Ed Yoo. Ed and Paloma have played together in various configurations since then, culminating in an acoustic cooperation that seems to work in a strange scruffy sort of way. With some quirky covers and an extensive list of originals songs they set out to rock out at small venues all over New York. Along the way, the drummer in Ed’s other band decided to see for himself what this was all about and thus Brian Petersen entered the fray on percussive devices. With their powers combined Brian, Ed and Paloma have formed Owl Stretching Time. A mash of heart rending lyrics about lost loves and weird keyboard noises joined together by a strange off the cuff name. When they’re not playing together, you can catch them playing around town in their respective groups:

and Josh Gordon.
Singer-Songwriter Joe Berg brings his passionate, soulful voice and rhythmic guitar playing to his set of solid original songs.

Legendary session player, multi-instrumentalist Josh Gordon will accompany the Wiggins Sisters and Joe Berg on a variety of instruments including mandolin, banjo and fiddle

... Family lore has it they sang before they talked.
Mizzy and Casey Wiggins are an acoustic folk and roots rock duo known for their powerful voices and rich sibling harmonies. The Wiggins Sisters can belt the blues or sing quiet Appalachian-style harmonies with equal confidence. Mizzy spent time in Austin and Casey in LA before coming together in 1995. They have earned numerous songwriting awards from Boston to Austin and have gained a following across the Atlantic as well. Their self-produced debut CD came out in 1995. Their second CD “Minnesota” was produced by Lloyd Maines (of Dixie Chicks fame) in Austin, TX with some of the finest musicians that town has to offer. ‘Minnesota’ received rave reviews. The Wiggins Sisters are currently working on a new CD due out in 2009.

"One listen to the Wiggins Sisters will tell you why they’ve won so many songwriting awards. Their sensitive and intelligent songs show a broad range and a fancy for variety. Some of their songs are about real world topics, and others evoke foot stompin' fun. Their lyrics evoke crystal clear visual images set off by a comfortable musical style that showcases their country blues and folk influence on
their work"
Terry Schommer, NY Times Herald Record

"Their music moves me deeply. Their new album is a huge leap musically and lyrically"
Marilyn Rae Beyer, PD WUMB/Boston

"The Wiggins Sisters go about the business of making music quietly, gently and very professionally. If you haven’t heard of them yet, you will. They write songs full of depth that sing in your head long after the music’s over…"

David Massengill a great Dulcimer, guitar player & songwriter!

Singer / Songwriter / Storyteller
He's an extraordinary Dulcimer & Guitar player with amazing songs and stories.
http://davidmassengill.com

David Massengill has written songs recorded and sung by the Roches, Joan Baez, Dave Van Ronk, Nanci Griffith, Tom Russell, David Bromberg, Chad Mitchell, Lucy Kaplansky, Shawn Colvin, Diana Jones and just recently, the young Anthony da Costa. Though he's lived in New York City for over 30 years, he still has his accent from east Tennessee, where he once chased a bobcat and vice versa. As a boy it was his heart's desire to be a viking or an escaped convict. Noted for his mountain ballad style story songs accompanied on an Edsel Martin dulcimer, he is frequently an artist-in-residence at schools, with his song and picture book programs. He is also a storyteller of charm and wit. Dave Van Ronk once said of David, "He took the dull out of dulcimer." He has a variety of handmade picture books, bootleg and label cds available. His latest cd releases are a tribute to the songs of Dave Van Ronk, entitled "Dave On Dave" (2007 Gadfly

Wed. June 3 - FEATURING - THE GLASS RATS
with
MELISSA REBURIANO & BRANDON HOGSTAD
A high powered duo with extraordinary guitar and intense vocals.

MUSIC OPEN MIKE - 8 PM -
come on out to hear this great band!.. great fun for a spring night!

Brandon crawled out of the desert north of los angeles known as palmdale
(also home to afroman and frank zappa.) By day he is a lab rat on first avenue,
by night he noodles with steel strings.
Melissa hails from daly city, ca.
by day she is a grad-student andinner-city educator. by night she is a musicalicist.
along with brandon, she continues to write songs as a means to explore what
escapes prosaic language. melissa does not sleep. brandon is usually hungry.
GLASS RATS hatched out of open mic love betweentwo berkelian, pinoy, aquarians.
If PJ Harvey, Portishead, and the White Stripes had an orgy while listening to
'80 post punk pop and spawned a couple of reasonably attractive fraternal twins,
that would be f-cking amazing. It would also sound like the
GLASS RATS.

Wed. May 20 - Frank Christian, Tom Adams & Chae Brown

Frank Christian is a consummate songwriting musician, renowned for his
virtuosic guitar playing. With guitar roots ranging from traditional
folk to acoustic blues, to big band guitar picking, Frank interweaves
his music with lyrics that reveal a richness of illusion and metaphor,
infused with irony and densely-textured imagery. His last album, "Mister
So & So" was cited as one of the top ten albums of 1997 by the Boston
Globe. Christian's work has been included on more than 50 albums, and
he's played and recorded with Nanci Griffith, Suzanne Vega, Christine
Lavin, John Gorka, Dave Van Ronk, The Smithereens, and Odetta, just to
name a few. His extensive tours throughout the United States and Europe
have included performances at Carnegie Hall and The Royal Albert Hall.

"An accomplished guitarist and singer, Mr. Christian commands a wide
variety of styles... A distinctive stylist performing distinctive
original material... Christian writes and sings languid, blues-flavored
songs that conjure up the New York bohemian life with a dreamy,
understated sensuality.."-The New York Times

"One of Frank Christian's fortes is the ability to write new songs that
sound like standards--instant classics...One of New York's finest
talents." -Boston Globe

The TJ Adams Trio
TJ Adams is a relative newcomer to the New York music scene. While he
has been writing music and songs for nearly 20 years, he began
performing music in New York about a year ago, looking to showcase the
material he accumulated over the years by himself and in collaboration
with a collection of talented friends and musicians. His music
combines insightful lyrics and catchy, accessible tunes, reminiscent
of REM, Ryan Adams (no relation) and Neil Young. Mixing humor and
emotion, his songs tells stories about relationships, friends, lovers,
and memories, good and bad.

Over the past year, TJ has been playing some of the legendary downtown
New York music venues, such as the Bitter End, Arlene's Grocery, Paddy
Reilly's and Cafe Vivaldi. He'll be accompanied by a winning mix of
youth and experience: the wonderful and generous
Frank Christian, a
New York guitar legend, and the
talented singer Chae Brown, who brings
a soulful sensibility to the songs. Chae will be leaving shortly for
California, so this show will be part of her farewell tour, for now at
least.

TJ recently recorded an EP, "These Are the Rules", with Frank and Chae
which is now available on iTunes. For more information visit www.myspace.com/tjadam

• Wed. May 6 - FEATURING... ANN SCOTT - Visiting from Ireland at long last.
This wonderful singer songwriter has come to the U.S. by way of Chicago and NY and
we're happy to welcome her to our venue.
ANN SCOTT - Nominated in the best female category for the 2005 and 2007 Irish Meteor Awards, Ann Scott has developed a reputation as an intense performer and firebrand songwriter. Her debut album ‘Poor Horse’ was voted into the Hotpress musicians' poll of Ireland's top 100 albums ever, while her second album We're Smiling has met with hearty critical acclaim and a growing number of fresh converts. Experimenting with unusual melodies, ideas and lyrics, Scott's musical armoury consists of a range of left-field guitars, newfangled synths, detuned mandolas and some quirky ideas on how to go about playing them. A prolific writer and busy performer, Scott has shared the stage with artists as diverse as Blondie and Fairport Convention, slogging hard on the live circuit between Ireland and the UK. As a vocalist she is in frequent demand, during the past year alone singing on records for Kila, David Kitt and Mark Geary, with whom she dueted for movies such as Loggerheads and Steel City.In 2005 her electronic collaboration for the Earsugar Jukebox Label under the guise of Cracklebox received a gracious welcome in the UK garnering plays and praise on XFM, BBC1 and BBC 6. Scott’s trump card however lies undoubtedly in her own work and in her instantly identifiable voice. With this her second album, her own independent label, and the growing acclaim of fans and peers alike, Scott continues to redefine and challenge herself as one of Ireland's most original creative voices.
